"You see, information is power. An informed patient is an empowered patient, able to make informed decisions in their best interests."

Agree. The information that Amanda Trujillo had given to her patient is a kind of power that gives her patient the freedom to choose. Yet, this freedom of the patient consequently may hinder the freedom of Nurse Amanda to practice her career. Indeed, Ms Trujillo is courageous enough to face this consequence, and every nurses must be like this. Fighting for patient advocacy is always worth it, eh.

Thanks for sharing,

Again, here is a discussion involving the shortage of nursing faculty which a big problem, since we are the individuals who train students to become competent nurses. It is a global issue which is going to require the revamping of incentives to attract individuals to this professional as well as more training to ensure the educators are equipped to teaching students the innovative technological ways in which to document and learn nursing education. I hope in my lifetime there are some changes to be made to help equip the world with the necessary tools needed to care for patients since they are living longer.

This article perfectly summarized the commitment nurses have to patients. There are several stumbling blocks which may continue to stand in our way, but we must continue to do what's right for the sake of patient safety. Nurses must ocntinue to make sure patients have correct information which helps them make informed decisions regarding their health. This is why nurses must continue to enhance their bedside manner and cnotinue to let the caring hearts guide them to make decisions which have an overall impact on the patient.

Great to see the support for our patients, and our fellow nurse advocates. Collaboration must begin in our training (docs and nurses), and then implemented into our practices. The balance of power should always shift to the patient, they are at the top of the hierarchy, and ultimately make the final decision.

Great information. There are a lot of things to consider before starting your program. I sort of just jumped into and did not take the time commitment into consideration. There were many times I wanted to quit. Make sure you have a strong and understanding support system in place who will talk you back up when you are down.

Thanks Kim for the interview! I really enjoyed working with you on this and look forward to seeing part two. I hope this helps other nurses who are thinking of taking the plunge into the Master's field and further beyond. I am so glad to be able to take care of my patients and see them progress into a more healthy life.

What is a nurse made of?

To be a nurse, one must has pizzazz and the willingness to expess themselves and make their needs wanted for the sake of helping others. A nurse is an individuals who puts the needs of others before their own. This individual consistently cares for others without thinking. They may work through their lunch break or go home late to ensure that quality care has been given to the patients in which they serve. A nurse is a positive force in the health care field. So despite the negativity mentioned above, there is good and bad in every professional. But for the committed invidividuals such as myself who feel we were born to help and care for others, this is a lifelong committment to providing quality to the patients in which we serve by all means necessary.

This post really hits home. I am conducting research to determine why seasoned nurses are leaving the profession and what can be done to recruit new nurses into the profession. Its going to take some work on the part of nursing programs as well as seasoned nurses to paint a picture of the profession and see what goes into providing quality care to the patients in which we serve. I hope this situation helps to decrease the nursing shortage and help create confident, competent nurses in the process.

Whoa! I'm so glad you have opened this door so I can vent! Don’t rush me when I’m giving nursing care to my patients. They have come, not out of a desire to be there, like a casual shopping trip to buy eggs, but because something is wrong. So let me have my time with them if you don’t mind, and even if you do. No one asked my opinion when Wall Street business thinking indoctrinated our health care. Productivity is the new mantra. The more patients we can scan, probe, stick, and admit the more income we generate. So just hurry up, and get that patient to the next waiting tech would you, so we can see more, more, more, and fill up those beds. Time is money, and you’re costing us.

I have a bone to pick with you over that kind of thinking. Those patients are flesh and blood. They have brains, and emotions. They are humans., and deserve the best nursing care I can provide. So please step aside, and let me do my job. To hell with your money and productivity.

All of this push to decrease patient waiting times will lead to errors, hopefully none fatal. I believe, like Disney, if we slow down, and treat people like we'd want to be treated patient satisfaction scores will increase automatically. Some restaurants have signs that say, "Your meal was freshly prepared, not pre-cooked. We hope it was worth the wait." Maybe health care needs to re-think its Wall Street methods, and realize we're dealing with humans and their health, not just their money.
