Accelerated BSN to MSN: BSN to MS in Nursing
An accelerated BSN to MSN program is a second-degree track for students who currently hold a baccalaureate degree in another discipline. An accelerated degree option allows students to quickly achieve the credentials necessary to practice nursing. By pursuing both a BSN and an MSN simultaneously, students can enter the field with advanced academic and clinical training in less time traditional programs. These programs often take three years to complete and prepare students for a variety of career options in the healthcare industry.
How to Apply to an Accelerated BSN to MSN Program
Accelerated programs have different eligibility requirements. Some schools start by accepting students into the BSN program before transferring to graduate study. Once accepted into the BSN program, students will complete all baccalaureate nursing courses and other general education requirements. Upon successful completion of all undergraduate coursework, students can then apply for admission to the MSN program and begin advance training in a specialty area. Other schools accept students to both the BSN and MSN program.
Each school has its admissions procedures and the directions for the personal statement vary. However, the standard materials students must typically submit include:
- Application form with application fee
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended
- Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), depending on the program requirements. Note: This may not be required if you have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in nursing courses for the baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- Two to three letters of recommendation
- Statement of Purpose
Accelerated BSN to MSN Degree Program Requirements
Program requirements vary by school and the applicant’s educational history. Some students can transfer credits earned at other accredited post-secondary schools. This provision might apply to students who have already completed courses in biology and chemistry or other science-related classes. Applicants who do not have transferable credits will be required to complete all general nursing and education courses regardless of academic credentials and professional experience. Each college or university has a different credit transfer policy.
Program requirements vary according to the degree program, but students must typically complete the following:
- Complete all undergraduate coursework in addition to any general education requirements determined by the school.
- Complete all graduate coursework in a specialty area. Students elect to pursue either a clinical or administrative concentration.
- Clinical Specialties: acute care, adult nurse practitioner, clinical nurse, family nurse practitioner, infection control nurse, and nurse mid-wife
- Administrative Specialties: nurse administrator, nurse educator, nurse informaticist, and nurse manager
- Earn certification in area of practice and fulfill other assessment criteria determined by degree program.
